I just started, as a warrior.
I think it works because I can explore pre-searing and learn of the monsters, interface etc within a safe (strong defense wise). If the first few times I go out I get killed right away it would be annoying and frustrating. Also, it is easier to understand an axe than the use of a spell.
Within 3 days I created an elemental. By then I know the map somewhat, I know the monsters around, I know the missions and interface. Now I can concentrate more on spells, mana/energy, etc and not so much on the mechanics of the game.
So the warrior lets you explore the game and the interface without too much worry on the char. Once you have that down, you can concentrate more on the chars and not the mechanics.
