YOU DECIDE: Collaboration or Competition
Now that the Photics Arcade is online, it's time to start working on some new games. What do you think is the best way to go about it? Should we work together in collaboration, or should there be another competition?
I have a simple project in mind - Gwen's Rock, Paper, Scissor Challenge
(No one entered the first time around. I'm bringing the project back to life.)
The final project would need to have the following: - A title screen, with a cool looking logo
- An instruction screen
- Gwen's animation
- Getting ready to draw
- Standing still
- Rock
- Scissor
- Paper
- I Win (Gwen Giggles)
- You Win (Gwen gets sad)
- Tie (Gwen looks confused)
- Background graphics
- happy puffy clouds that drift across the sky
- flowers that sway with the wind
- Sound Effects
- Gwen's Voice
- Background Music
- Title Music
- Game Over Music
- Game Over screen, that ties into the High Scores
- Scoring
(You start with three hearts, you keep challenging Gwen until you lose.)
Reasons for collaboration: To create a Flash game, you need to know a lot. Maybe you're just an illustrator. Maybe you're just a code warrior. Through collaboration, you can contribute your best work. Therefore, the final project could be much better than if you worked alone.
"We can fight alone, but our strength is many times greater as comrades in arms when we fight together."
Reasons for competition: I have a Guild Wars: Nightfall code to give away.
You decide. I'll let the poll run for two weeks.

Collaboration could be difficult, so I say do another contest.
I'll enter this time too.

Let's not forget, there are obvious downsides with competition. If you enter the contest and lose, you will get nothing. Only the best version of "Gwen's Rock, Paper, Scissor Challenge" will make it on the site.
With the collaboraton plan, there is no chance of winning the prize, but there are benfits. For example, a link to your site may go on the credits section. Another plus, you won't have to work as hard.
Which will better motivate you - friendship or victory?

Anywho if you are still up to it I'll get started on the game asap it should be done in about 2 weeks of solid working.

It's not so much about the end product. It's more about seeing the Photics community interested in something again. Since the Photics Arcade was the most popular part of the site, it's important to have this type of dialogue. The poll will close on 12-21-2006 at 07:38 PM EST.
I'd like to see everyone work together, toward the common good. Would it be tough to organize? I don't think so. I would turn on file attachments for this forum, so that Registered Users can upload content - such as JPEG files and other artwork. Meanwhile, actionscript can be uploaded with the "CODE" tag.
Yet, competition is also interesting. I don't work well with others. I'd rather know the project's deadline, then get the work done myself. In every group project that I've ever been in, there's always someone who doesn't work their hardest. It drives me nuts, as that ultimately reflects on me. If someone doesn't finish what they're supposed to do, everyone else suffers for it. Instead of wasting my time making sure that everyone does what they're supposed to do, I can get things done quicker if I just do it myself.
That's what's so ironic about this. While I usually prefer to work alone, here I am cheering for collaboration. I'm trying to open up this site to more community involvement. While it is tough to work together, the final result can be so much better.
The vote is almost up. If you have opinions on this matter, now's the time. While I prefer collaboration, I'm not voting for it. This one is up to you. We can go with another competition or we can go with collaboration.

I couldn't make up my mind on this for a while.. I'd like to see a collaborative work, but I think it might be too difficult to arrange, and get people to commit to the project.
But, I think a collaborative piece would be neat.. and I'd like to think that there are enough people interested to give it a shot.
So.. I chose Collaborative. Let's give teamwork a fighting chance

I prefer to work alone myself and considering I already started working on it. To tell you the truth I am willing to do this one without any kind of reward because guild wars has lost its lack luster with me plus, and I been really wanting to do a flash game for a while. If it turns out that Collaboration wins I wouldn't know what to do but I would rather wait and see. I am still going to work on the one I got right now and hope that either something goes my way, by the way can't we have a friendly competition to? Anywho in the end it's up to Mike right, just let it be known that I am ready and willing and currently working on the RPS game.

I'm not good at programming, but it seems that the best way to make this probably would be...
A competition, but you can have teams. So people who like to work together can, and people who like to work alone can. This way, you don't have people who don't like to work together having to if they want to help program it, you won't have conflicting programming styles, you will be able to pick your favorite, and everyone gets to choose how they want to make it.

This was mentioned during the first annual Photics.com Guild Wars Game Design Competition. Some people wanted to make teams. The problem is, that means more prizes would be needed. I only have one Guild Wars: Nightfall code to give away. You can't split a Guild Wars account.
At least, you're not supposed to.
There's less than day left for voting. It's all or nothing... Collaboration or Competition!
