I give the new Assasin class as it has been presented    on a scale of 5

The PvP pre-builds for Assasin don't really capitalize on their best skills.

After reading through the skills I realized that the deadliest/most useful skills are not included in the pre-builds. With abilities such as "Targets enemies spells are disabled for 3-9 seconds", teleportation type skills, and skills that allow self healing this class will be a useful class once people unlock all the skills.

It takes a little while to get use to having primary, off-hand, dual-attack, skills and to learn how to use them to their highest effectiveness. Once you do however you can deal a fair amount of damage in a short period of time.

The main complaint I have with this class is mana. The amount of mana is fairly low to begin with then if you go through a combo (4 skills of at least 5 mana each used in succesion) you run out of mana really fast. You can barely stand toe to toe with a monk and you'll run out of mana faster then them.

This rating might improve upon actual release of Factions and as skills are unlocked but the PvP Free for All weekend Assasin was middle of the road IMO.

One question: When you first create a new character with assasin as one of the classes...do you get any basic skills?
Cause, when I first created a assasin/monk, the only skills that were available in the skill tree were monk skills...is the only way you can get assasin skills by unlocking them using faction points?

At the moment you have to unlock any skills for them using faction, to use some of their skills you'll hae to take a pre-built A/W or whatever the other A/? was, and both of these have only the basic skills for Assassin, with only one (rather long) combo.

The reason I didn't bother to play the new classes much this past weekend is that unlocking skills is so much easier through PvE. I just couldn't bring myself to waste faction on non-elites. I'll play the classes when the expansion comes out.

As soon as I found out about the PvE tombs, all other avenues of exploration ceased :) The only other class I tried was the Ele/Assassin in the Zaishen Challenge, but that quickly degraded into just pure fire ele. It's easy to beat the challenge with all henchies with a pyromancer, but I found it virtually impossible to win any missions (aside from the Illusionary Weapon one) with any other class.

I did all of them with my ranger by useing either trap group or mixed grp. Only the spike one was tough, they always picked on the monk :)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I didnt see anything that looked like "backstab" from neverwinter nights. Of course, I only used the skills that were preset for the assassin, but It would be nice to sneak up on to an unsuspecting enemy and stab them in the back for major damage. (or even teleport up to them, stab them, teleport back... teleport back in...stab again...teleport back... etc)

Yah, I don't remember seeing backstab either.

I can see why ArenaNet would want to leave out stealth, but I don't see how a backstab would be a problem. It should be an elite though. I don't like the idea of someone combining Temple Strike & Backstab.
