The debacle that you are referring to was called The Power Glove... a blight on the history of gaming. I didn't own one, but I had something almost as bad... the Power Pad. Let's just say it was not as popular as Dance Dance Revolution... and I'm no fan of DDR.

Anywho, I'm hoping the PS2 hardware is compatible with the PS3, I hear they are going to use Blue tooth for controllers, didn't notice if that mentioned they would have USB interfaces too.

That's an interesting thing to consider. Even if the PS3 has full compatability for every PS2 game, will the guitar actually plug into the PS3?

I just don't understand why you would buy a next gen console just because it's backwards compatible.
By the way, has anyone played Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, it's a nice platformer where you control Donkey Kong with bongo's, it's also a lot of fun.

Once device with many purposes... that's important to me. Why would I buy a PS2, when the PS3 is going to be available soon? The PS2 is very old hardware. This way, buying a PS3 is like buying a new console, a PS1 and a PS2. Even though none of the PS3 games impress me right now, that might change. With a newer console, I would have the potential of being randomly surprised. With the PS2, the machine is heading for retirement.
Would I buy a machine just for backwards compatibility... no. Is that a big part of the equation... yes. For example, the XBOX 360 backwards compatibility is spotty. That is one of the many reasons that I didn't buy one.

ok, but it will still be quite a while before the ps3 comes out, and seeing as the ps2 isn't too expensive anymore, I think it would still be worth it to buy one.
The ps2 really does have some nice games, like shadow of the colossus, dragon quest 8 and, like you said, guitar heroes.
Why wait such a long time to play them when you can buy a ps2 pretty cheap now.
Oh yeah, I almost forgot: for backwards compatibility, get a revolution and you can play gamecube games and download n64, snes and nes games.

Why do I want the thing backwards compatible ...
Well as a parent, after you have had your PS1 and PS2 for a few years, suffering the abuse only young kids can produce, it's nice to have a brand spanking new console. As for compatability, yes the games are old ... but they are still fun and still cost me Uber $$$$ when I bought them. I want to suck every last cent of value out of these games.
If the PS3 lets me do that then I can discard the PS2 to friends or family and still finish off that infernal Final Fanasy X. :P

ROFL ... Never said I was a fan, just reminded me ... Yeah it was really cheesy ... I think the game console makers should find a way to integrate the old Atari 2600 controller into the new consoles. The were near indestructable, many hours of fun and many more suffering blistered hands :D

Ah the Power Glove. Made popular by the movie The Wizard. As to Guitar Hero I had a great idea for a game. What if the companies who made Guitar Hero and the DDR and KR series got together and made a game using the guitar controller for guitar music obviouslly, the DDR pad for a drum contoller, and the microphone controller from Karaoke Revolution. Can you say Band Revolution?
