Lost In Ascalon #42 - Lightbringer
I have a new hobby in Guild Wars - farming promotion points for the Lightbringer title. With Guild Wars 2 off in the distant future, I'm stuck in an unusual spot. I'm not excited about other MMORPGs, but I'm still looking for something to play right now. That's when I started looking into titles, as they're supposed to have some type of effect in the sequel. Yet, some have amazing bonuses for right now. Imagine, a 40% boost in offense against creatures of darkness?! Now that's something worth grinding for. How do you write such an activity into a Role-Playing storyline? How do you discuss sequels and titles while staying in character? Lost in Ascalon episode #42 finds a way.

Ahh... so you picked up on that. Very good!
I didn't set it in stone, as it depends on how ArenaNet does things. (If I can have single names in Guild Wars, I'll go with "Photics". If not, it's going to be "T A N K" who will lead the Crusaders to victory once again!) So basically, Devona and Photics get together... and many MANY years later... their childrens' childrens' children carry on the bloodline. Eventually, one of the decendants of the Photics Clan gets married, then gives birth to a baby Paladin - TANK or Photics reincarnated. I'm thinking on having ONLY ONE character in Guild Wars 2, as there may not be a level cap at all. If there is no level cap, it makes the most sense to focus on one character.
The Order of Whispers knows about the bloodline. That's why it's important for them to keep Devona and Photics alive. Plus, the Order is fighting against the forces of Abaddon. That makes Photics a natural ally.

Would Stan Lee kill Spiderman? You don't kill off your A-level characters. We're not talking about Rurik here. We're talking about Devona! She's the star of Guild Wars. In the Guild Wars lore, who is greater? "When I was a young girl, my father fought in the Guild Wars. He gave up his life to keep our home safe. Because of his sacrifice, I grew up to know the meaning of the word peace. But now, a new threat rises from the west. A malevolence that seeks to destroy all that my father fought for. I know not the name of this evil. Soon though, it will know mine. The days of peace are over."
It's interesting though. While we know that ArenaNet does read Lost In Ascalon, I'm not sure what they think about the storyline. Do they like it? Do they hate it? Does it influance the creation of the lore? Sometimes I feel like a wild card in the Guild Wars community. There are NPCs in the game that were named after Alpha testers. There is no such NPC for me. In other words, there's no official nod to the Lost In Ascalon series... not in the game... not that I could see. ArenaNet makes tons of references to other things in their games. Yet, it seems to be an unwritten ArenaNet law - DO NOT MENTION "HIM".
Think of the possibilities. I think "Photics" would make a great henchmen or hero. Although, with Cynn, Zhed, Sosuske and others, do we really need another Fire Elementalist to choose from? HA! Also, I would love to write a fan-fiction novel based on Guild Wars lore. Unfortunately, I couldn't sell it. Heh, so that's not likely to happen. I have some other ideas for a fan-fiction project, but my skills are not up to that level yet. Anyway... my point is this... ArenaNet could easily change their lore to crush my series, or they could change the lore to acknowledge the series. Neither has happened so far. I've only made two assumptions about the future... - Gwen is alive
- Devona stays alive... and single!
...the rest is really just straight from the game. I doubt that they'd kill Devona. It would be like officially killing the original Guild Wars series. The game starts with Devona and friends. Each chapter expands on their story and their struggle. Lost In Ascalon was named for two reasons... Photics is looking for Gwen, who was lost in ascalon... and innocence was lost in ascalon. The series is about the struggles of our heroes. Will they ever regain the joy that they had in Old Ascalon?
In this comic, I say, "Yes!"
Hundreds of years separates Guild Wars 1 & 2. That suggests a period of peace, which will probably result from the end of Guild Wars: Eye of the North. It looks like there's going to be a confrontation between the Ascalonians and the Charr. I'm thinking the Ascalonians will win this time around, as ArenaNet is wrapping things up. We're moving on to the sequel. It is conceivable that Devona would follow in her father's footsteps... that she would give up her life, so that her children would know peace. Yet... Devona has no children. So... she must live!

I can believe that!
...but if that's the case, it surprises me that they haven't taken a shot at me. There are some jokesters on ArenaNet staff. It seems like the potential for comedy is too great. I don't think it's ego alone though. I'm not the only one in the Guild Wars community with an extremely healthy self-image. Heh! But somehow, I tend to stick out of the crowd more than others. When ArenaNet is quiet... when you know they're thinking... it's disturbing. I don't know if they're just ignoring me because of my arrogant nature... or because they're saving something "special" for me. HA!
Seriously, there are great people over at ArenaNet.

I thought about this. Perhaps there was a way for Devona to have a kid in between chapters. That seems unlikely though. A love interest for the main character is not something that you glance over. I didn't see anything in the lore to suggest that Devona has or had a love interest. There seems to be a thing between Mhenlo and Cynn though, so I quickly changed my storyline. Originally, I planned a thing for Cynn and TANK.

Well, she can always marry an npc called "Pothics" in Eye of the north.

You can make a bad thing (they being ignoring you) into a good thing (they being saving something special for you). Your house must be really big if your head can fit there.
I'd like it to be truth as there are many other player references like the npc's in the Halls of Chokkin (the lore experts at Gwonline), but it seems unlikely. It appears that Anet has abbandoned us. Of course they still watch us but it appears that they've lost interest.

When you say that, do you mean this site or the Guild Wars community in general?
If I ran an MMORPG, I would keep in constant contact with the community... but I would do it Order of Whispers style. Why announce that you're an ArenaNet employee, not when you can secretly gather useful information? I would make it known that my operatives do exist in the community, but that their idenities are hidden. You'd never know who that forum member or party member could be. Photics: How do you know all this?
Whispers: I make it my business to know. Now come, we must talk to Dehjah.
If you announce that you're an ArenaNet employee, you're ultimately opening up yourself to abuse. You can't please everyone. Eventually you're going to run into a ranter. "Why did you nerf my solo farming. You suck!" Blah, blah, blah... there's always going to be something.
