Smile Pre-defined Guild Wars Avatars

I added 10 Pre-defined Guild Wars Avatars. There's one for each profession. They're 32x32 pixels. You don't need any special post count to use these.

You can select one by accessing your Avatar setting in the User Control Panel...

Nifty!

Have any plans to make some avatars from other games?

Any suggestions? Keep in mind, I'm pretty obsessive about respecting copyrights.

Guild Wars 2; Tabula Rasa; Exteel; World of Warcraft; Lord of the Rings Online; Asheron's Call; Nintendo characters; Halo; Half Life; Warcraft III (particularly the Pandaren Brewmaster)

Anything you can think of to add some variety.. those class icons are getting old

Grrr!

Heh, that post made me angry. I think that should be a new rule around here. You can't complain unless you post a suggestion. Heh, yes... I know there are other games out there, but where do I get the avatars? I looked at Lord of the Rings Online and they have a nice avatar page...

http://www.lotro.com/index.php?page_id=76&siid=10

I spent a good part of the day resizing the Avatars from 80x80, down to 64x64. I found about 10 avatars that I liked. It wasn't enough. That's when I wrote to Gaile Gray. I was wondering if she had high res versions of the Guild Wars Profession Icons. I'm still waiting on that, but the email discussion lead to some interesting ideas...
  1. Why not just upload all of the skill icons? Roughly 800 icons should be enough to keep people happy, right?!
  2. 800 vs. 10 is kinda lopsided. Do I really want to mix Lord of the Rings with Guild Wars? Do we want people with Guild Wars Avatars writing about Lord of the Rings, or vise-versa? (Blogs are coming... soon!)
  3. Guild Wars 2 is not going to suck... is it?
That's when I started to really think about things. All of the other games come and go. Sure, I love playing Wii games, but this site is mostly about Guild Wars. Now while I don't mind discussion about other games, it's hard to deny that this site is associated with Guild Wars.

I'm in an excellent posistion here, to truly turn this site around. There were some mistakes that I made when the original version of Guild Wars was launched. Now that the forum is back, what should be done with it? I think it's time to have one of those huge traffic sites. When I first started in the Guild Wars community, I just wanted to make my electronic magazines. Yet, I found a strong community! It was fun being part of that. What's going to happen when Guild Wars 2 launches? I think this site should be part of the action.

So what does this mean?
  1. I added 105 Warrior Skill icons to the avatar section.
    (More are on the way!)
  2. The forum and the blogs will have a Guild Wars focus, but I'll leave the other forums open. It's fun to talk about game development and other video games.
Does that sound good to everyone?

Default Nice Variety!

This is great! Some of those skill icons make excellent avatars

I like your idea to keep the site mainly Guild Wars themed, will you be bringing back the Guild Wars banners for the top of the main page? I thought they were very well done.

Sorry for not posting some concrete suggestions for avatars, I didn't have the time when I wrote the post .. though it seems my time would have been wasted anyway since you stuck with the Guild Wars avatars

Has there been any Guild Wars 2 specific content you would be able to turn into avatars? Some Sylvari avatars wouldn't go astray *drool*

Sitting on my desktop are six, mostly blank, JPEG files. They serve as reminders to create new artwork for the main Photics.com sections. I was thinking on sketching something for each category. I don't think it's appropriate to have Guild Wars banners appear when I'm writing about Halo or Super Mario Galaxy. (Gaile would probably freak out!) The Guild Wars banners do appear when you're in a Guild Wars section though.

I actually have a copy of Carrara 6 Pro. You'd think that I'd be able to make something with that, but I've been distrated. I had a girlfriend for a short while. It was wonderful.

But sadly, we're not together anymore.

I suppose that there's a bright side. Now I have more time to work on this website. I have so much to do. I can't believe how much there is to do. I take a few weeks off for the holidays and all this stuff happens. I certainly didn't imagine myself uploading hundreds of avatars or relaunching the forums. But hey, if it makes the Photics Community happy, then I'll get back to it!

By the way, you chose a nice avatar!

Brand spanking new forum. Looking forward to seeing where we go from here. And, though I'm sure it is on your to do list, I'd love to see a few more necro skill avatar options.

Heh, yah... adding more skills to the forum is on my list of things to do. The plan is to eventually add all of the Guild Wars PvP skills.

Also, the blogging system is new. After checking out the link in your signature, I'm thinking that you might be interested in starting your own blog at Photics.com

Cleave is already in the avatar list. Unfortunately, the list is not in alphabetical order. I'm planning on putting the list in order, but not all of the Warrior skills are uploaded yet. The problem is that the Guild Wars Fansite Kit is somewhat inconsistant.

The Prophecies skills have a thick black border around them, while the other skills have no border at all. I'm thinking that the avatars should be consistant. I'm going with no border, because an HTML border can be added easily. Yet, that leaves 35 Warrior skills left out. Fixing those 35 Warrior skill icons is on the list of things to do.

About three years ago, ArenaNet released these weird .doc files for skills. I saved those documents. I probably have most of the Prophecies skill images without a black border.
