This Thread Was Created With A Wii
To truly test out the new Opera web browser, I decided to try writing a post from the Wii. It's pretty neat, but more like a novelty. Hunting and pecking for letters is tedious, which hurts the usefulness of the system. There is an auto-complete field, which shows words as you type. For example, if I type "exe", it will show executive and exercised as choices.
Oh snap! I made a new paragraph
Browsing from the Wii is a lot better than viewing a site from my Sidekick 3, but the Wii is no match for even a lousy Pc. (Oh, and that "c" should be capitalized, but the Wii kept changing it to Pc. You have to turn off the autobar to get PC. Yah, I suppose that I could go back and fix the other Pc, but scrolling up is a pain. You can only view two lines at a time while typing.)
I can't use the WYSIWYG editor, but Flash works. I'm going to try the Photics Arcade later. My expectations are low, as how do you play Ranger Lady Jigsaw without an "alt" key? (Note to self: Gwen's Rock, Paper, Scissors, Challenge should

...ok, now for the rest
I decided to finish my post from a PC.
(I could only type so much in the field before the Wii stopped me.)
...I was about to mention that Gwen's Rock, Paper, Scissor Challenge should use the mouse exclusively. Why? You can play flash games on the Wii. Although, it's not fun as with a PC. I wandered over to www.homestarrunner.com where I watched some flash videos and I then I played Pop Tire, but it's just better to play with a mouse than a Wiimote. I got a much higher score with a mouse, as a mouse is more responsive.
I really didn't see what wasn't included with this "Trial" version. The Internet Channel is already pretty good. If it didn't say "Trial" version, I wouldn't have known the difference. There is room for growth, as the browser doesn't support PDF or most video formats. Flash Video works, but the browser would reset when I tried to view Flash Paper documents. Perhaps "Trial" stands for the random resets that you might encounter.
The Opera Browser is a free download - for now. Yet, I was expecting to be more impressed. It's good to be back on a PC. It's strange. The things I like about the Wii, I didn't think I was going to like - The Mii Channel and Wii Boxing. Meanwhile, I was disappointed by Opera and Zelda.

Now that I'm back to civilization I'm going to download the browser and try it out tonight.. Christmas with the family is great .. but lack of broad band internet is not so fun
did you try wiicade.com yet? They have a collection of flash games that work well with the Wii's control style.. there are a few fps flash games around that might work well too

I wasn't impressed. It's easier to play Flash Games on a PC. That's one of the reasons why I started looking at XNA. One of the motivating factors for the Photics Arcade was the idea that I could play Flash games on the Wii. Now that I've actually tried it, I've lost motivation. I still like making Flash games, and I'd like to make some more, but Wii support is something of a novalty.

I wanted a Nintendo Wii for Christmas... :'(
About how long did it take to create that first post using the Wii?
Can someone tell me what XNA means?

I can type about 1-2 characters per second with the Wiimote. That post was about 1024 characters, so figure about 10-15 minutes. It could have been longer. It's definitely a slow process.
As for XNA, that's Microsoft's Game Studio Express. It's software to make PC and XBOX 360 games. See http://msdn.com/xna for more details.

Haha, 1024 characters, you actually counted?
XNA looks quite complicated just to use... Do you need anything other than Visual C#?

No, I had notepad2 do it for me. I cut n' pasted the text from the first post into a new document window, I highlighted the text, then blam... instant character count. The full thread is 1027 characters, not counting the smiley. I don't remember, but I think I did some editing. I'm thinking the limit is 1024, because that's 4x the 256 character limit on outgoing wii messages. After this post, I'll do a character count test post to truly test it out.

It is quite complicated. There are lots of programs used to make an XNA game... - Visual C# 2005 Express Edition
- Microsoft XNA Game Studio Express
- Microsoft Cross-Platform Audio Creation Tool (XACT)
- A program to make 3D graphics
- A program to make 2D graphics
- Audio creation / manipulation / editing program
I have everything but the 3D graphics program. I still haven't figured out which one I'm going to use.

1024 it is .. and we also found out vBulletin splits up words with more than 50 characters lol
I'd be ok with the character limit if the message sent faster .. it doesn't make sense to me why it takes so long to deliver a message
edit: 100th post!
