Photics Team Presents – A Contest For GameSalad Developers

The GameSalad forums seems to be growing more grumpy lately. Since that’s one of my favorite spots on the Internet, I’ve decided to give the developers something else to fight — instead of each other. Game development can be pretty competitive, but there’s something else that’s more important than making hit games. Living a healthy life, that’s more important. You can’t make games if you’re too sick or dead. But not everyone is a scientist or a doctor, so how can a bunch of game developers save lives? That’s where the Photics Team gets involved with a new contest!

The Photics Team is highly ranked at Stanford University’s folding@home distributed computing project. (Currently 907 of 195106) By using the collective power of our personal computers, we’re helping scientists better understand protein folding and the related diseases — such as Alzheimer’s, ALS, Huntington’s, Parkinson’s disease, and many Cancers.

To enter the contest, join the Photics Team. Every point you contribute to the team (from the date of this post until February 28, 2011 12:00PM Eastern) may count as a chance to win a promo code for The Unofficial GameSalad Textbook.

To enter the contest, join the Photics Team…

…and then immediately post a comment on this post. Let the world know that you’ve joined the team. The name you use for the Photics Team page should exactly match the name you use for this website.

REMEMBER: The Photics Team number is 60254 and you get bonus points for registering a passkey with Stanford University.

This contest is open to residents of areas that are supported by iTunes, except Quebec and where such contests are prohibited. The winner will be chosen at random. Each team point for the folding team counts as a chance to win. The contest starts from the date of this contest, until February 28, 2011 (12:00 PM Eastern Time). (The contest may run a little longer if I don’t get to the stats page right away.) employees are prohibited from entering the contest. You must be at least 13 years old to enter the contest.

Winner must verify their folding account. Simply post a comment in this thread with a valid email address and your Folding@Home user name. Failure to follow site rules may result in disqualification. The winner will be notified by email and the winner will be announced on the website. The winner must respond with a valid name and postal address. (Canadian residents will also be asked a mathematical question.) If the winner does not provide the appropriate information within one week, the winner will be disqualified and another winner will be chosen. In the event no winner is selected by March 8, 2011, the contest will expire.

THE PROMO CODE WILL NOT BE SENT BY POSTAL MAIL. The promo code will be sent to the winner by an email message.

The prize has no commercial value, as promo codes cannot be sold. However, The Unofficial GameSalad Textbook has a retail value of $24.99. Applicable taxes (if any) are the responsibly of the winner. Photics is not responsible for unforeseen circumstances, such as electrical failure, acts of God, floods, fires, war, famine, pestilence, site outages, etc. Photics reserves the right to modify the rules and/or the prize to accommodate unforeseen issues. By entering the contest, you agree to these contest guidelines and the rules of the website..

  1. Hey all I’ve downloaded and joined the Photics team. Hopefully I win I’ve been wishing for that book for quite a while. :)

    1. Are we really expected to compete against Oracle who is already 2000 points higher than his/her starting point?

    1. It’s usually within 24 hours, but it depends on the speed of your machine. If you find the folding@home log, it should tell you the percentage of work completed. If you have a system tray icon on a Windows machine, mouse hovering over the icon should show the progress.

  2. Hey just want to say thanks to for this. It was actually quite entertaining participating in this contest.

    THanks Photics
