Be faithful to your lover, not your computer. While I still like my Mac, some radical changes to Apple’s hardware line has me concerned about the future of the Mac. With the removal of the optical drive from the new Mac Mini, disappointments with Mac OS X Lion, the White Macbook going bye-bye and the hardwired MacBook Air RAM, the entry-level Macs have become less attractive to me. That’s why I started wondering about Microsoft Windows.

Hard work, that’s supposed to be the secret to success… right? Technology changes that. Humans are the dominate species on this planet because of tools. We can make things that make our life easier. That’s what software developers do. They’re creating software to make your life easier. Their hard work is your gain, but some are really exceptional at their trade. There are applications that are so simple to use, so powerful by design, they can replace years of study and training.
If you’ve been following this website, you might have detected a strong hatred toward Adobe. I consider their software to be overrated, bloated and expensive. Sure, Photoshop and Illustrator were great — BACK IN THE MID 90’s — but the software just hasn’t progressed all that much since then. True, there are some nice new features in the latest version of Adobe’s Creative Suite. Are these features worth hundreds of dollars? I don’t think so. That’s why I purchased Pixelmator. I like to encourage competition!
Competition – that’s the basis of a capitalist economy. It’s the American way. The theory is that consumers will support the best products and services. Thus, the inferior companies will go wander off into the snow and die. It’s the stuff from high school history courses. It’s one thing to theorize about competition, it’s another to experience it first hand. New software called “SpriteDeck” reminded me of the intensifying Corona vs. GameSalad battle. It’s beautiful and frightening sight to behold.
Now that I’ve switched back to a Mac, I get to enjoy exciting news like this – The Mac App Store is now available. By clicking the little Mac logo at the top left of the Mac OS X desktop, and then selecting “Software Update” I started the download for 10.6.6 – which includes the Mac App Store. I’ve been using Macs for almost 18 years. Software has always been a problem. With this new option for Mac Developers, maybe things will change.
